Semprus SurfacesTM Overview
Semprus BioSciences is developing innovative, multi-faceted approaches to solving complications associated with medical devices. Our Semprus SurfacesTM product platform focuses on controlling the interface between the body and a medical device to address the root cause of many adverse reactions to “foreign” implanted materials (including biofilm formation, thrombosis, and cell overgrowth). Semprus Surfaces™ is based on a bioinert, covalently bonded surface modification that reduces the attachment of bacteria, fungus, platelets, and blood proteins for the life of a device. The technology mimics the chemical properties of endothelial cell membranes, thereby reducing the foreign body response to an implanted device; this response often contributes to inflammatory reactions – in addition to infections and thrombosis.
Semprus Surfaces™ has been specifically designed to maximize stability and prevent potential degradation through hydrolysis, oxidative stresses, enzymolysis, or mechanical abrasion. This durability empowers Semprus SurfacesTM technology with the potential to provide the prolonged activity required for many permanent implants.
A Substantial Biomedical Platform
This highly biocompatible surface also provides an excellent platform for the incorporation of immobilized or leaching active agents to tailor desired biological functionality. Specifically, by preventing the accumulation of biological material on the surface, Semprus BioSciences’ technology can greatly enhance the availability of active agents to achieve their desired function – without the risk of "biofouling" and deactivation.
Applicable to Many Substrates
The adaptability of these benefits to diverse substrates – such as polyurethane, silicone, and titanium – creates broad opportunities for enabling next-generation products with improved clinical benefits across the medical device spectrum.
